11-year-olds to take on Snowdon in memory of granny

Mason and Elliot, both aged 11, are the best of mates, having known each other since they were babies. They like nothing more than gaming together and going out for long walks in the fresh air - and it was this pastime that inspired them to embark on a fundraising challenge in memory of Mason’s beloved granny, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth had been cared for at the Hospice in 2019 and the family wanted to find a way to give thanks for the 'amazing care' she received. Mason and Elliot decided to research the possibilities.

Mount Snowdon in North Wales seemed like the perfect challenge for two boys with lots of energy. Mason said: "It's one of the highest mountains in the UK and we think it’s going to be a difficult challenge for us. Maybe it will be the start of many more mountain hikes we do!"

Having raised more than £800 already, they’re on track to smash their fundraising target. In preparation for the big event in April, Elliot shared their training schedule that they've put in place to take on this huge mountainous landmark which takes between 4-8 hours to complete: "We are walking a few times a week either on the flat fields where we live, up to 12km, or up big hills nearby such as Pegsdon Hills and Barton Hills. After we've completed the challenge we will probably feel very tired and sore but it'll be worth it!"

If you're considering setting up a similar fundraising expedition in aid of the Hospice, Mason and Elliot have some words of encouragement: "Just do it! Put all of the training in as it will feel satisfying when you get to the end. It gives you a really good goal to focus on and you will be proud of what you can achieve."

When asked what his granny would have said about the boys taking on such a big challenge, Mason remarked: "I think she would've said 'I'm so proud of you'."

You can keep up to date with the boys' story over on Instagram or head to their JustGiving page.
