Cousins running Mini Mudder raise £2,500 in memory of auntie

Last weekend, Jaziel and Mayson took part in Muddy Mayhem to support Garden House Hospice Care. The 7- and 11-year-old cousins tackled the Mini Mudder, a shorter version of the main event for children, in memory of their great auntie Diane. The pair collectively raised just under £2,500 in sponsorship.

Our annual Muddy Mayhem fundraiser took place on Sunday 24th March at Woodhall Estate, Watton-at-Stone. It saw around 300 participants run through mud and streams, clamber over man-made obstacles and have a laugh. More than £31,000 was raised in total, enough to fund Garden House Hospice Care's entire services for three days.

Jaziel and Mayson wanted to take part to raise money to support people like Diane - fondly known as 'Auntie Didi' - who received care from our Hospice at Home team and on the Inpatient Unit in 2022. Before the event, Jaziel said:

"I thought it looked fun and I knew it was for a good cause, so I said I'd do it. I'm always running around doing something active, so I wanted to challenge myself and help the Hospice raise money so they can help people like my Auntie Didi."

There were smiles all around on the day of the event as Jaziel and Mayson arrived in their matching Muddy Mayhem t-shirts, ready to tackle the course. The cousins had such good fun that they ended up running two laps. Jaziel continued:

"While I was waiting, I was thinking how fun and muddy it looked. I could see the adults running back from the main event and some were soaking and covered in mud, so I was excited to get started! My favourite part was going through the last river - it wasn't as muddy so I could run quickly, climb over the obstacle and zoom to the finish line.

"I think all kids would like doing it as its muddy, wet, fun and exciting, but more importantly if you ask people to sponsor you, you can help the Hospice raise money, which is very important as they need our help. I want to do it again next year!"

Jaziel's mum Kylie added how proud she is of her son and nephew:

"I'm so proud of both Jaziel and Mayson for the hard work they put in promoting their pages and generating donations. I was delighted with the way they took on the challenge, running around the course as fast as they could jumping over the obstacles with happy faces. They thoroughly enjoyed the obstacle course and getting wet and muddy, so it was a success all round!"

The Hospice would like to say a huge thank you and well done to both Jaziel and Mayson for their fundraising efforts. Between them, the cousins have raised enough to fund four days of care for one patient on the Inpatient Unit, helping to ease someone's symptoms and make them comfortable.
