National Careers Week: Meet our apprentice Amelie
National Careers Week provides a focus for careers guidance at an important stage in the school year to help support young people develop awareness and excitement about future pathways. In this blog post, Marketing & Communications Assistant Amelie gives an update on her apprenticeship as she nears the end of her course.
I began working at the Hospice in October 2022. You may have read my 'A day in the life' blog from last year and for National Careers Week I wanted to give a further insight into my role and the benefits of learning on the job.
Being at the Hospice for coming up to a year and a half has been such a rewarding experience so far. As someone who came into this role as a school leaver, I really didn’t know what to expect.
In school I was never someone who knew exactly what they wanted to do. I was never top of the class or particularly academic but when it came to being creative, that’s where I thrived. I knew that when I eventually left school, I wanted to go into a job that allowed me to put my creativity to good use.
When I left sixth form, my plan was to have a gap year as I was so unsure of what I wanted to do. I was working at a bakery when I got forwarded an advert for a Marketing and Communications Apprenticeship at Garden House Hospice Care. After reading the job description I knew it was too good an opportunity to pass up, so I sent in my application and the rest is history!

Working while studying has been just the best experience! I have always been someone who learns by doing so this apprenticeship has been absolutely perfect for me. I now head projects and have worked up what I believe is a strong reputation across the organisation. As time has passed my confidence has grown so much and I feel that I have been given such a variety of experience during my time here.
I am only 20, so I know that I have many working years ahead of me, but to have found something already that I enjoy so much, makes me very excited for how my career will progress. I think that continuing to take advantage of new learning opportunities is a no brainer. I believe that the more I learn, the more confident I will feel in my abilities to do the job right and with theory behind it.

I love working in the Marketing Team at the Hospice because it’s such a varied role. Every day is different, in fact, every couple of hours is different. I am always working with all departments across the organisation, creating videos, graphic design, writing articles, email marketing, internal communications, and social media are just a few examples of the day to day tasks that fill up my working week! It’s definitely a busy job but that is what makes it so fun, I never get bored!
If you are thinking of taking the apprenticeship route or even just finding yourself a new job, my main advice would be that it never hurts to apply. Even if you feel like the chances are slim, be confident in yourself that you do have what it takes. I think people underestimate how rewarding and enjoyable work can be. I genuinely love my job and feel so lucky that I get to do what I do. Working for Garden House Hospice Care is a pleasure.
